Vietnam: the 6th Jibes Sunrise Surf competition

0

This year the competition was held towards the end of November on the beautiful beach of Full Moon Village Suoi Nuoc. We held out as long as we could for the best conditions and the waves did not disappoint, neither did the competitors. We saw a definite increase in local Vietnamese riders, great to see local enthusiasm from some of the best Vietnamese riders in the country. Other nationalities included Russia, America, United Kingdom, Indonesia, Italy and Spain, making for a great mix of nationalities sharing their passion together. With over 32 competitors we knew this was going to be one of the most exciting Surf competitions seen so far.

As is the surfing way, it was an early start, the first competitors arriving at 05.00 to get some practise sessions. Glassy conditions with some clean frequent sets made for a perfect start to the heats. Due to the large number of competitors heats were arranged for ten minutes each with three-four competitors per heat. We saw some outstanding SUP action, the Vung Tao riders really gave the competition some edge and drama as they paddled it out to make it in to the next round. The Female surf event also saw some vast improvements from last year with an increase in both competitor numbers as well as riding style.

As the heats continued and the unlucky competitors were knocked out of the running, we gradually arrived at the finals. The Men’s Surf division saw the four top riders (Sky Rama, Tai, Win and August) giving it all they had to take top position. The SUP finalists (Dimitry, Lam, Joao and Pavel) gave a great nail biting final performance, showing off their skills and all looking for the best wave to take them to the top of the podium. The female finals came down to the top competitors (Anna and Anya) head to head they fought against each other, neither one wanting to give up before the sound of the final horn.

After the last heat was completed in each division the results were collected and anxious faces waited to hear the final results. The closing ceremony and award giving was held straight after the event, prizes this year included such gifts as Starboard SUP paddle, 6’ Jibes Fish Surf Board, Shamal eye wear, hotel vouchers, Bee surfing surf wax, golf vouchers, mini golf vouchers, restaurant and food vouchers, water sport rental vouchers and many many bottles of Freixenet Champagne. Big thanks goes out to all our sponsors who made this event possible, Coca Cola, La Vie, Tropical Mini Golf, Lang Ca Voi, Bee Surfing Wax, Sea Links, Blue Ocean Resort, AHI, Dragon Beach, Pizza Belle, The Warehouse, Le Fruit, Real Adventures and Full Moon Village. Warm thanks to all those involved, hope to see you all again next year with more new faces, nationalities and the creation of some new surfing memories.
