  • Nguyen Thu Huong: Women Leaders international network
    20.09.2017
Vietnamese business community highly appreciates Mrs Nguyen Thu Huong. Miss Sport Vietnam in 1998, owner of several business and women magazines in Vietnam, honored with the title Mrs Vietnam 2012 and 1st runner Mrs World 2012, founder of Women Leaders International network. Business&Leisure: Women Leaders International network , what was the path of from the beginning till now? Nguyen Thu Huong: We started in 2013, until now almost 4 years. We started with me and 10 friends, who supported the idea of Women Leaders International network (WLIN). Now in Vietnam we have around 500 members. And we network with international partners. We supported Women Leaders Malaysia to develop very well. In Vietnam we have 7 clubs. They support each other in business development and networking. Till the end of this year we plan to have 10 clubs, with number of memebers up to 1000 business women. The most important is quality. So we can really support together in business. Business&Leisure: Purpose and principles of WLIN? What is the difference between WLIN and other business associations in Vietnam? Nguyen Thu Huong: With the vision of WLIN supports the women to become more beautiful and more confident and successful. WLIN supports for women to develop themselves, to perform more effectively in business, society and bring better world for the next generation. What is the difference between WLIN and other business clubs in Vietnam? It is special, it is for women only: to meet, to share, to exchange. WLIN is the number one business club in Vietnam for the women, it has big network. We can not only support with networking for our members in Vietnam, but in other countries as well. We plan to reach the target: 10.000 members worldwide in 2020. Business&Leisure: Business women from how many countries are linked within WLIN? Nguyen Thu Huong: WLIN is linked with many countries, where we have Vietnamese people living and doing business, they help us to deliver the ideas and values of WLIN to the local business community. In ASEAN, WLIN has connections with Singapore, South Korea, Malaysia, Hong Kong, China, USA, Australia. Also we just finished set-up for WLIN in South Africa. Business&Leisure: WLIN in Vietnam, is it mostly for local business community or integrated with international businesses in Vietnam? Nguyen Thu Huong: Basically, WLIN with the word international in the name, is networking globally? Not onlu in Vietnam and trying to connect business women from different countries. Open the door for Vietnamese business women to meet the global partners and help international businesses in Vietnam to get an access to Vietnamese market. We network with Korean, Taiwan, Japanese, Europeans doing business in Vietnam, we help them to connect to real Vietnamese market. If they only know EuroCham, AusCham, AmCham etc, it is difficult to understand the real local businesses. Now in Vietnam we have something about 60.000 companies, 40% of them are owned by women. Moreover, women have leading positions in many companies as well. If the foreign businesses in Vietnam can connect to these women, it means they can connect to the real market. If the connect to WLIN, they can understand Vietnamese market better. I plan to organize a special club for international business women currently doing their business in Vietnam to gather within English speaking club in the framework of WLIN. Business&Leisure: What of the projects within the framework of WLIN that you personally feel the most proud of? Nguyen Thu Huong: WLIN has a lot of activities. CEO-kids is a program to support for the next generation to develop leadership from the childhood. Also we praise value of mother with program Mother Beauty Award. Women should be successful both in business and personal life. Live a beautiful balanced life, beautiful both inside and outside. Every year, we organize a big event for women leaders, we call it Beauty Queen. I am so proud because of the Women Leaders Beauty Queen. After training, our members change very positive way, they look more beautiful, more professional in public speaking, media appearance, personal branding. Every year in March we have Women Leaders International Forum. When all international clubs within global WLIN network meet together to join the activities and business networking. Membership fee: 10.000.000 vnd/year (around 500 usd) All members are granted with a privilege of access to 3 big WLIN events in the year. Every club has weekly member’s meeting, usually organized as business-lunch or networking dinner, depending on the destination: Hanoi, Hochiminh-city, Hai Phong, Da Nang, Nha Trang. ××××× ALSO INTERESTING: Forbes Vietnam Business Forum 2017 Vietnam: business community delighted with PM’s initiative on labour competitiveness Vietnam: overtime laws could change soon Vietnam: domestic private sector and international standards Citizenship-by-Investment for Asia’s Elite Some history linking Vietnam and Trump Vietnam: MOF allows Vietnamese to enter casino ××××× DOING BUSINESS: Japan: briefly about Doing Business 2017 Korea: briefly about Doing Business 2017 Malaysia: briefly about Doing Business 2017 Singapore: briefly about Doing Business 2017 Thailand: briefly about Doing Business 2017 Vietnam: briefly about Doing Business 2017

  • Russia-Japan: Vladimir Putin and Shinzo Abe made statements for the press
    08.09.2017
Press statements following talks with Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe President of Russia Vladimir Putin: Mr Prime Minister, ladies and gentlemen, We are happy to welcome such a representative delegation from Japan here at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok for the second time. The impressive presence of our Japanese partners at the forum is becoming a good tradition. This is a great opportunity to discuss the joint projects we are already implementing and map out new plans. I invited the Prime Minister of Japan to take part in another major international economic forum – the St Petersburg International Economic Forum in late May 2018. Prime Minister Abe accepted our invitation. We also agreed to attend the opening of the reciprocal years of Russia and Japan together on May 26 in Moscow. As for these talks, they were substantive and straightforward. Both sides demonstrated their desire to develop constructive cooperation in various areas. I would like to note that recently we have managed to restore a number of mechanisms for Russian-Japanese political dialogue. In March our foreign and defence ministers resumed their consultations in the two-plus-two format. The heads of our national security councils held talks before our meeting today. Mr Abe and I have agreed that the Chief of the Russian General Staff [Valery Gerasimov] and the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Land Forces [Oleg Salyukov] will visit Japan soon. Positive trends have been reported in our trade and economic cooperation. Mutual trade increased by almost 15 percent in the first six months of this year and reached $8.4 billion. The structure of our bilateral trade is improving. The share of fuel and energy is decreasing in Russia’s exports to Japan, while the volume of foods and agricultural products, as well as non-ferrous metals and chemical goods, is increasing. During our meeting, we highly assessed the eight-point cooperation plan that was proposed by Prime Minister Abe and the joint list of priority projects. The Intergovernmental Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation, the High-Level Group and the Advisory Council on Energy have been working effectively. Russian and Japanese business activity will be boosted by the Convention on Avoiding Double Taxation, which we signed a short while ago. Japan’s participation in the INNOPROM 2017 exhibition in Yekaterinburg as a Partner Country has produced practical results. We are looking forward to welcoming our Japanese partners at the INNOPROM exhibition next year. I would like to say that Japanese companies make extensive use of the advantages of doing business in priority development areas. In April 2016, a greenhouse farm was launched in the Khabarovsk Territory jointly with JGC Evergreen and the Hokkaido Bank. Plans provide for buildings three more such complexes. We are implementing the Sakhalin-1 and Sakhalin-2 oil and gas projects. We have built Russia’s first gas liquefaction plant, which exports the bulk of its products to Japan. Work is underway at Sakhalin LNG to build the third production line. We are building up our cooperation in nuclear energy. We hope that the joint projects to clear up the consequences of the Fukushima accident will be coordinated by the end of the year. Our talks with Mr Prime Minister also included discussions of a promising idea of direct railway communication between our countries. However, this calls for additional in-depth analysis. We are promoting cooperation in education. We appreciate the activities of the Association of Russian and Japanese Universities, which has sponsored a Russian-Japanese student symposium, which is currently underway in Vladivostok. Our cultural and humanitarian ties have grown stronger and are promoting the development of a positive atmosphere and mutual trust in bilateral relations. In June, Prime Minister Abe attended the opening of Russian Seasons in Tokyo. The 12th Festival of Russian Culture opened there in July. In November, Japan will attend the St Petersburg International Cultural Forum as a guest. We are promoting sports cooperation. After the planned events end at Far Eastern Federal University, Mr Abe and I will attend the International Jigoro Kano Junior Judo Tournament and the ground-breaking ceremony for the Martial Arts Centre on Russky Island. We also discussed the question of the peace treaty, including the possibility of joint economic operation on the South Kurils. Following the August 17 talks between our foreign ministries in Moscow, we have selected several promising projects that will be implemented as a priority. They concern above all cooperation in aquaculture, wind power, greenhouse farms, household waste recycling and package tours. As agreed with Mr Prime Minister, this year the process for Japanese citizens to visit the burial sites of their relatives in the South Kurils was simplified as much as possible. Many of you know that, regrettably, the first direct flight for this purpose had to be cancelled due to bad weather. Now a similar trip is planned this month, and I hope the weather will not let us down this time. Naturally, much attention at the talks was paid to the crisis on the Korean Peninsula. We discussed this issue during our September 3 telephone conversation and today continued this substantive discussion. We strongly denounced the launch of the North Korean medium-range missile that flew over Japan on August 28 and the next nuclear test on September 3. We understand and share the concern of the Japanese side. Needless to say, by its actions Pyongyang is creating a serious threat to peace and security in the entire region. I reaffirmed to the Prime Minister our position that the situation on the Korean Peninsula and, particularly, the nuclear issue can only be settled by political and diplomatic means. To begin with, it is necessary to reduce the general tensions and then develop a dialogue between the interested parties as has been proposed, for example, in the Russian-Chinese roadmap for a step-by-step settlement. On the whole, the talks with Mr Abe were meaningful and very useful, in particular for the further development of bilateral cooperation in many areas. I would like to express my gratitude for this to Mr Prime Minister and all the members of the Japanese delegation. Thank you for your attention. • EEF2017: Russian-Japanese talks
    08.09.2017
Vladimir Putin held talks with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Vladivostok to discuss prospects for the development of bilateral relations and current regional issues. President of Russia Vladimir Putin: Mr Prime Minister, colleagues, I am very happy to see you here in Vladivostok. We constantly stay in contact, and this facilitates the work of our businesses and governments. As I mentioned, 270 Japanese companies operate in Russia. Our trade turnover is beginning to grow steadily after a slump; it has increased by over 16 percent in the first six months of 2017. I would like to thank you once again for accepting our invitation and for attending the Eastern Economic Forum. We will also be happy to see you at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum next spring, keeping in mind that cooperation between Japan and Russia, of course, exceeds the boundaries of such a huge region as the Russian Far East. Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe (retranslated): Mr President, As I promised last year, I am happy to meet with you here in Vladivostok. I am happy to note that the agreements reached at our meeting last year are steadily being implemented. I believe that all areas of Russian-Japanese relations continue to develop. Today I am counting on a frank exchange of opinions for unlocking the tremendous potential of Japanese-Russian relations. I am also ready to discuss the issue of North Korea and other regional tasks to make our significant contribution to ensuring regional peace and stability. I am also counting on a productive discussion to take a step forward, including on the issue of concluding the peace treaty. I would like to cooperate with you in joint economic activities on the islands and also in providing the maximum possible freedom of movement to the former residents of these islands for the purpose of accomplishing our historical task, specifically, the conclusion of the peace treaty. • EEF2017: Meeting with Vice Premier of the Chinese State Council Wang Yang
    06.09.2017
Vladimir Putin had a meeting with Vice Premier of the People’s Republic of China State Council Wang Yang in Vladivostok. President of Russia Vladimir Putin: Comrade Wang Yang, friends and colleagues, It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to Vladivostok. You know that I have held extensive talks with the President of China, Comrade Xi Jinping, who is a big friend of Russia. I would like to again congratulate our Chinese friends on the success of this BRICS summit. I would like to say that you personally are doing a great deal to promote Russian-Chinese ties. In this context, I will sign an executive order to award you the Order of Friendship. You will receive the order during your meeting with Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev. I know that you have a packed agenda. You have been to one city today, and tomorrow you will travel to another city, Khabarovsk. You have come here from a trip to Volgograd, and in Khabarovsk you will chair a meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission on the development of relations between the Russian Far East and Northeast China. I would like to say that nearly 200 Chinese companies were presented at the Eastern Economic Forum last year. Contracts worth nearly 2 trillion rubles, or more precisely 1.9 trillion rubles, were signed then. Total Chinese investments made in the Russian Far East in the past two years exceed $3 billion. This is evidence of our efforts to implement the agreements we reached with the President of China. I am confident that we will be able to do a great deal at this year’s forum as well. We know that many of our Chinese friends, business people, have come to the forum. We hope that the volume of contracts we sign this year will be even larger than last year. Your work has produced a solid practical result. Vice Premier of the People’s Republic of China State Council Wang Yang (retranslated): Mr President, First of all, I would like to thank you for your high opinion of the BRICS summit in Xiamen. I also want to thank you for awarding me the Order of Friendship. It is a great honour for me, and I am ready to make even greater, maximum efforts to promote Chinese-Russian relations. I also want to say that this is the second time you are receiving the Chinese delegation and me personally in the beautiful city of Vladivostok. I think that this is not just a protocol issue; it speaks to your great attention, the strengthening of the traditional friendship between our countries, as well as the efforts to intensify bilateral contacts. Vladimir Putin: I remember that you attended the first forum in 2015. We met there. Wang Yang: Yes. This is my third visit to Vladivostok. Over the past three years, the implementation of the Far East development strategy has changed Vladivostok. I think that the changes in Vladivostok are a microcosm of all the changes in Russia. I want to note that in recent years, under your leadership, Russia has dealt with the sluggish growth of the world economy, and, despite the sanctions of the West, has maintained stability and solidarity in society. The Russian economy began to gradually, steadily recover. Key economic indicators improved. As a good neighbour, a reliable partner and a good friend, the Chinese side is sincerely glad for your success. The Ambassador told me that during the BRICS summit, Chinese President Xi Jinping offered a new assessment of bilateral relations. He said that Chinese-Russian relations are not just relations, but comprehensive strategic partnership and cooperation, as well as friendship. For me, too, this is very positive, good news. I think that as your friend, I can resolve other issues for you, leaving more time for you to relax. (Laughter.) You know well the programme of my stay in Russia. Indeed, I held a meeting with Mr Rogozin yesterday, and tomorrow I am ready to take part in the work of the China-Russia business dialogue together with Mr Trutnev. The day after tomorrow, all of us will go to Khabarovsk to hold the first meeting of the intergovernmental commission. Such a high intensity and frequency of contacts is indicative of more active interaction between our countries. The main objective of my visit to Russia is to implement the agreements reached at the level of the heads of state. I would like to tell you that Mr Rogozin, Mr Trutnev and I have established not only close working contacts; we are old, good friends. Now let me say a few more words about the progress we made after our meeting in 2015. At that time, an initiative to strengthen cooperation in maritime affairs was put forward. I would like to let you know that last year, the Chinese Maritime Safety Administration and the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences undertook two joint expeditions to the Bering Sea, that is, in the Arctic area. On September 20 of this year, the aforementioned organisations will hold a joint seminar on maritime research in Vladivostok. During the upcoming seminar, the First Institute of the Chinese Maritime Safety Administration will sign an agreement with the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences on establishing the Centre for the Study of Maritime and Climatic Conditions. These are the results of work in the area of maritime research. I can assure you that it was not for nothing that you awarded me the Order of Friendship. (Laughter.) I did my bit to promote cooperation. Thank you very much for the time accorded to me. Vladimir Putin: President Xi Jinping’s assessments of the level and nature of our relations are absolutely objective and correspond to realities. But it is you and your Russian and Chinese colleagues who are creating the real substance behind all this in the course of your work. I would like to thank you for this again and wish you success. • Thailand: Wat Arun will officially be reopened the end of 2017
    25.08.2017
The world-famous Temple of Dawn pagoda, also internationally known as Wat Arun, will officially be reopened the end of this year after being closed to visitors for three years to undergo repairs and renovation along with other structures in the temple compound. Mr. Yuthasak Supasorn, TAT Governor said, “This was the biggest repair and renovation work to take place on the temple in recent memory. The importance of this work, and that of Wat Arun to Thailand’s history, culture and tourism industry cannot be understated. “It used to be the home of the Emerald Buddha, and over the years has now become one of the most visited tourism sites in all of Thailand. The completion of the renovation and official reopening celebration in December this year is the source of great pride to all Thai people.” The 66.8-metre-high pagoda is the main feature of Wat Arun, which is decorated with seashells and bits of Chinese porcelain that glimmer in the sunshine. Under direction from Thailand’s Fine Arts Department, Wat Arun started undergoing renovation over three years ago, specifically to secure the base of its majestic pagoda. It was initially envisioned by Somdet Phra Chao Krung Thon Buri (King Taksin the Great) in 1768 after fighting his way out of Ayutthaya, when he arrived at this Buddhist temple just as dawn was breaking. He ordered the temple’s first renovation and renamed it Wat Chaeng, the Temple of Dawn. A 10-day long celebration of the completion of Wat Arun’s renovations will take place at the end of this year from 27 December through to 5 January, 2018. The festivities will include a tribute to Somdet Phra Chao Krung Thon Buri (King Taksin the Great), who ordered the previously mentioned restoration of the temple during his reign, along with ancient cultural and Thai dance performances. There will also be an exhibition on the temple’s history, showcasing the importance of its role in Thai society, highlighted by a display of award-winning photos of the temple taken over the years with the first images of Wat Arun dating back to 1865. • Thailand: treasures of Thai textiles
    20.08.2017
Thailand remains a country of weavers and wooden looms, artisans making traditional Thai Textiles – Treasures of a Kingdom by hand in a time honoured way despite the rise of mass produced, industrially manufactured materials and fashion. Northern Hill Tribe Textiles Chiang Mai offers an amazing insight into Thai textiles via the ethnic dress of the Northern Thai hill tribes. Each tribe, who migrated from the Himalayan foothills to Thailand, has a unique traditional textile tradition that is in contrast with one another as much as they complement. Silver and gold thread embroidery, seed embroidery, applique and chain stitching of animal and insect motifs are popular adornments. Women of the six most prevalent tribes; Karen, Lisu, Meo, Lahu, Yao and Akha, all go to Chiang Mai markets to sell their hand-woven textiles. Similarly, the art of Mo Hom has advanced in recent years to meet the desires of creative consumers looking for authentic artisan products. Mo Hom is cotton fabric manipulated into various patterns using the strength of the dye and time soaked in the solution, producing stunning shades of indigo across a spectrum from dark navy to sunlight blue. Southern Region Textiles The textiles of Southern Thailand exhibit characteristics and influences of those from Malaysia and or Indonesia’s island of Sumatra. Pha Yok is a rare cloth woven only in Nakhon Si Thammarat and Trang provinces. It is another type of fabric that was favoured in the past by royals and people of noble birth. It is like Songket (a Malaysian cloth) and requires high-skilled weavers and complicated techniques. Gold and silver thread woven into this kind of cloth creates its lustrous texture. Hang Karok is a technique unique to the Southern Region that uses two-coloured twisted thread before woven. Centres of production include villages around Trang and in the Songkhla Lake area. Northeast Mudmee Magic The diversity of the ethnic people who settled in villages on the Khorat Plateau led to an abundance of different weaving styles, producing a vast array of silk and cotton textiles. Each is unique and beautiful on its own right as every Northeastern or Isan village will have its own signature style. Mudmee silk is a staple of the Northeast region weaving industry and H.M. Queen Sirikit is very fond of this kind of silk. Though it can be woven from cotton yarn, Mudmee is regarded as the ‘Queen of Thai Silk’ because of the Thai Queen and the textile’s intricate patterns. It is woven in almost all provinces in the Northeast region; such as, Khon Kaen, Nakhon Ratchasima, Roi Et, Surin, Buri Ram and Si Sa Ket. • Abdullah Cankaya: Vietnam-Russia tourism at a glance
    21.03.2017
Russia is ranked in TOP5 international arrivals to Vietnam in January 2017. Within last 5 years share of Russian market in the map of Vietnam tourism statistics grew immensely: from about 5.000 tourists per year before 2011 to 433,987 Russian tourists visited Vietnam in 2016. Exclusive interview with Mr. Abdullah Cankaya, Vice President Asia-Pacific Countries of Pegas Touristik, leading travel operator of Russia about past, present and future of tourism industry of Vietnam within  5 years retrospective and perspective. By Daria Mishukova ***** Business & Leisure: When you came to Vietnam to open a new destination for Russian market, for Pegas Touristik, what did you see in Vietnam? What was in the very beginning? Abdullah Cankaya: Actually I was interested to Vietnam as we were settled our company in Thailand (2004). I wanted to see around what else we could. That’s why I made trips to Vietnam at 2006 and 2008 two times to discover all and understand the country at almost all resort cities of Vietnam. Those times Vietnam as travel destination was very limited by room supply and infrastructure for Russian clients. At 2008 I had meet some individual Russian clients in Nha Trang and asked them: how did you come here? What made them to visit Nha Trang, in which way they were there? Learnt that they heard and wanted to visit. Feedbacks were good. But it was hard to reach: connecting flights, transportations, hotel bookings etc. And at my next visit at 2010 I did understand that we must start charter operation to Nha Trang. Business & Leisure: What was the most challenging in starting charter operation to Vietnam in 2011 and how did you overcome it? Abdullah Cankaya: That time in 2011 Pegas Touristik was the only one company who brought charter flights from different cities of Russia to Nha Trang. We wanted to fly with big body aircrafts, but at that time Cam Ranh international airport was not ready to welcome big body aircrafts by their equipments. And they could not give us a permission for landing of big body aircrafts in Cam Ranh airport. But the aircrafts (Boeing 757) we were using needed to stopover due to long distance and those aircrafts range was only 7-7.5 hrs maximum. We made some more attempts to explain our need and made meeting with Vietnamese authorities, with People's Committee of Nha Trang. They helped us to bring necessary equipments form Hanoi and HCM city and Nha Trang airport was ready to welcome big aircrafts. Today many big body aircrafts are flying to Nha Trang, thanks to this step. We appreciate and never forget this help for the current potential of tourism. But in 2011-2012 even Passport control booths were not enough. And there were no shops inside international waiting hall of Cam Ranh Airport. Now there are many, many changes and capacity increased a lot. Business & Leisure: What is the number of Russian tourists visited Vietnam with Pegas Touristik throughout these years and plan for 2017? Abdullah Cankaya: We started at 2011-2012 season with 80.000 tourists. And we came till crisis to 200.000 pax per year (including Danang). Years 2015 and 2016 were hard for Russian market.  In 2017 Pegas Touristik is planning to bring to Vietnam about 180-200.000 Russian tourists. Business & Leisure: Before 2011 for hotels in Nha Trang and Muine it was a typical situation: fully booked for Tet, booked well for weekend, almost no guests for 5 days/week. Was it challenging to deal with Vietnamese hoteliers at the beginning? Abdullah Cankaya: It took a really hard process for Pegas Touristik to explain our way of work. Vietnamese hotels never worked with global tourism charter business before. Even couple of times we collected all reservation and sales people in Nha Trang and Muine to explain the systems. But Vietnamese people are smart, they adapted quickly. I did not want to compare with other markets, but I can easily say that Vietnamese people are very smart to work with. Business & Leisure: Do the Russian tourists give positive feedback about Vietnam? What can be helpful to improve the situation with returning guests to Vietnam? Abdullah Cankaya: I may say that almost all clients are happy with Vietnam and services they receive as value of money. We don’t have major complaints. Improving the infrastructure is key point for return clients. But I must say, lately traffic jams, and squezzed downtown area started to be concern for future of Nha Trang. Nha Trang need to extend to new or larger downtown areas than Tran Phu street or this streeet need to avoid high traffic jams . Business & Leisure: Russian tourists are in TOP10 international arrivals to Vietnam. What is the rating of Vietnam as travel destination for Pegas Touristik? Your forecast for tourism perspectives of Vietnam for the next 5 years? Abdullah Cankaya: In Asia region, for Pegas Touristik Vietnam is a second bigger after Thailand. Market became like this, as Thailand was in market last 15 years, while Vietnam for us in operation just for 5-6 years. Generally among our other travel destinations, I may say Vietnam is in top 10. TOP10 travel destination for our clients: Turkey, Egypt (temporary suspended), Thailand, Spain, Greece, Tunisia, Cyprus, India, Dubai and Vietnam. Vietnam increased the number of rooms very quickly in recent years. But all other tourism attractions must come together besides building rooms. New beaches and new invests are coming to region.  My idea is tourist capacity (not only from Russian market) will double in 5 years with many right supplies. Namely: different excursions, better restaurants, cafes, shops, touristic shows, attractions. Even modern hospitals will help to maintain the increase.  I am very optimist for the future of this beautiful country Vietnam. ××××× Exclusively for Business&Leisure All materials herein are protected by copyright law and may not be reproduced or broadcasted without the prior written permission of Business&Leisure. • Vietnam: business community delighted with PM’s initiative on labour competitiveness
    23.02.2017
Vietnam is at a crucial stage of economic development, progressing from a being a low income to middle-income country. To continue this very positive trend, the country must be ever more internationally competitive. This can be achievedby observing what is happening within Vietnam and by learning from neighbouring countries. The World Bank and the Vietnam Business Forum (VBF) are assisting the government with ideas on how this can be accomplished. At the VBF recently, I made a suggestion to the Prime Minister about how flexible overtime, strategically controlled wage increases, better administration on foreign work permits and reviewing the labour code could all support Vietnam in becoming a more competitive internationally. The government has indicated that they are progressing on each of these issues, which is excellent news for everyone. Vietnam: overtime laws could change soon The Prime Minister himself has indicated that these HR matters are one of his top priorities. He has given a timetable regarding how the government will be working towards reaching these goals. The VBF sees this as an extremely positive development and they will contribute with their technical expertise and their knowledge on these topics in order to help in any way possible. Currently, Vietnam has one of the lowest overtime caps in the world. This makes it challenging for manufacturers to meet flexible export demands. I proposed to increase the overtime cap so it is closer to international standards, bringing Vietnam closer to the practices of regional peers such as China, Thailand, and Cambodia among others. This will make Vietnam more attractive to foreign export manufacturing investors and speed up industrialization. Another factor for foreign manufacturers to consider when entering the Vietnamese market is long-term employment cost. In China, there has been rapid wage inflation and the country already seems unattractive to international investors, because the country is no longer as cost-competitive. The government in Vietnam is planning to give clear controls and forward guidance on wage inflation, making the Vietnamese market more attractive to overseas manufactures, creating jobs to everyone’s benefit. For Vietnam to reach international standards, they need to transfer knowledge from other countries. The easiest way to do this is to have global experts come here to help businesses. The efficient administration of foreign work permits is an easy way to improve this vital knowledge flow. The Prime Minister correctly identified that reforming the Labour Code will benefit Vietnamese workers, the business community and the country. I organized recommendations from many chambers of commerce and we all look forward to developments in this regard. There are already some outstandingly good companies and human resources in Vietnam, with some of these already better than almost any other country in the world. Vietnam I believe has the potential to be one of the most successful countries in the world. The VBF and World Bank will do everything they can to share their knowledge to benefit Vietnam. The resulting strong domestic private business sector reduces the country’s dependency on foreigners, which is more economically sustainable in the long term. Vietnam has had the highest and fairest growth rate in the world over the last 20 years, so the business community and the World Bank are the first to praise the government for this achievement. A communist system is actually far more responsive and accountable than most foreigners would guess. The VBF put forward the business community’s case and the government has worked with us to get a really positive result. I am from England and cannot imagine being able to achieve such a good result with my own government – Vietnam is better in that regard. It is wonderful to see the World Bank, the VBF and the government all agreeing and working in the same direction. The Prime Minister has started a process which I have every confidence will bring Vietnam successfully to its next level of development. We thank the government for their leadership and achievements. • Vietnam: Overtime laws could change soon
    16.02.2017
Vietnam has one of the strictest overtime caps in the world, making the country less attractive for investors. Normal working time in Vietnam is limited to 8 hours per day and 48 hours per week. Overtime cannot exceed 200 hours per year. "We would like to remind you that Vietnam's overtime cap is much stricter than anywhere else in the region," said Mr. Colin Blackwell, Vietnam Business Forum (VBF)'s Head of labor sub-committee who is also a judge of the Vietnam HR Awards 2016. The Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs (MoLISA) propose that Vietnamese employees ought to be permitted to work a maximum of 600 extra hours per year. Two plans have been considered. The first is that the working time of an employee will be no more than 12 hours per day and less than five continuous days. The other is the same but limited to a maximum of 600 hours per year.It is expected to improve the competitiveness of Vietnamese workers with other countries in the region. Mr. Colin Blackwell believes that once the overtime cap is changed, it would help all foreign and domestic businesses to be more flexible and competitive. Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc asked ministries and agencies to consider adjusting the overtime limit trying to meet the market demand and international rules. 29.01.2017
Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump on January 28, 2017. Vladimir Putin congratulated Donald Trump on taking office and wished him every success in his work. During the conversation, both sides expressed their readiness to make active joint efforts to stabilise and develop Russia-US cooperation on a constructive, equitable and mutually beneficial basis. Mr Putin and Mr Trump had a detailed discussion of pressing international issues, including the fight against terrorism, the situation in the Middle East, the Arab-Israeli conflict, strategic stability and non-proliferation, the situation with Iran’s nuclear programme, and the Korean Peninsula issue. The discussion also touched upon the main aspects of the Ukrainian crisis. The sides agreed to build up partner cooperation in these and other areas. The two leaders emphasised that joining efforts in fighting the main threat – international terrorism – is a top priority. The presidents spoke out for establishing real coordination of actions between Russia and the USA aimed at defeating ISIS and other terrorists groups in Syria. The sides stressed the importance of rebuilding mutually beneficial trade and economic ties between the two counties’ business communities, which could give an additional impetus to progressive and sustainable development of bilateral relations. Mr Putin and Mr Trump agreed to issue instructions to work out the possible date and venue for their meeting. Donald Trump asked to convey his wishes of happiness and prosperity to the Russian people, saying that the American people have warm feelings towards Russia and its citizens. Vladimir Putin, in turn, emphasised that the feeling is mutual, adding that for over two centuries Russia has supported the United States, was its ally during the two world wars, and now sees the United States as a major partner in fighting international terrorism. The two leaders agreed to maintain regular personal contacts. The conversation took place in a positive and constructive atmosphere. • Vietnam: Starboard testing in Muine
    13.12.2016
Nothing stays the same in the sport of windsurfing. Companies are always pushing every year to discover the latest shapes and designs to keep their products at the top of the game. Test locations are chosen based on their wind and water conditions, so it’s no surprise that one of the leading windsurf board developers “Starboard” chooses Jibe’s Beach Club Mui Ne to bring their new ideas and concepts in to reality. This year’s secret testing was headed as usual by Remi Villa and his team of Pro Windsurfers Tristan Algret GPE 44, Gonzalo Costa Hovel ARG3:As head of the racing department at Starboard, Remi Vila is constantly looking for an edge that will make his hugely successful I-Sonic (Slalom Board) just that little bit quicker than the rest. Once out on the water the test team is not difficult to spot, just look for the largest camber sails cutting through the wind at the most astonishing speeds; camber sails are usually the weapon of choice as the test team tries to achieve as much power from the wind as they can. Vietnam: the 6th Jibes Sunrise Surf competition Vietnam: Muine windsurf competitions Mui Ne winds did not disappoint, giving some great conditions for the team to work their magic. Board after board was taken out to be put through its paces, results collected and then the fine tuning starts. Each board is passed over to the man with the fine tuning skills X; known locally as “The Ninja”, I presume due to all his protective clothing. As he busily sets to work mixing the latest resins and compounds, making the finest of changes to the board design which can result in major aquadynamic effects. The skills needed to achieve this are unobtainable to most. These test sessions attract the attention of local high level riders eager to catch a glimpse of what will soon be available to buy, but a strict no camera policy is adopted so as to keep and latest designs and ideas far from the competitor’s eyes. To see the whole testing and shaping process is certainly something to watch and gives the average windsurfer an idea of the amount of hard work and dedication that goes into each board. Testing is now completed for 2018 I-sonic but if you want to catch a glimpse of what Starboard has planned for their next releases then come to visit around November/December but please remember no cameras allowed. • Vietnam: domestic private sector and international standards
    10.12.2016
The Vietnamese government, the chambers of commerce, the world bank and ambassadors gathered in Hanoi on Monday, December 5, 2016 at "Vietnam Business Forum". The main topic was how the Vietnamese domestic private sector could bring itself up to international standards. The labour productivity achieved in Vietnam by some leading foreign investors was amongst the best in the world. If these same standards could be applied to the larger domestic sector, then Vietnam could genuinely be one of the most successful countries in the world. The way the top foreign companies achieve these results is consistent and not a secret. They channel the naturally intelligent and hardworking Vietnamese labour using clear and fair international standard human resource practices. On top of this there are some unique Vietnamese cultural strengths that allow a higher performance than even Chinese, Japanese, European or American workers. The Vietnamese family spirit can be turned into unrivaled teamwork. The Vietnamese fighting spirit can be turned into unbeatable motivation and winning spirit. I showed that the government, foreign investors and the domestic sector could mutually support and benefit from each other. I suggested the way forward as the establishment of a Vietnamese Human Resources Institute, similar to that which most peer countries in he region have had for decades already. It is the role of the human resources profession to introduce these top standards to the domestic sector. This would largely be in the form of standardized government accredited vocational training standards. Vietnam has already made remarkable economic progress. The World Bank stated that the growth rate is second only to China and that the wealth distribution is very equitable. But the best is yet to come - when the full potential of the Vietnamese workforce is realized, Vietnam will achieve one if the highest GDPs per capita in the world. This will happen faster than many people inside or outside of the country expect. • Vietnam: the 6th Jibes Sunrise Surf competition
    09.12.2016
This year the competition was held towards the end of November on the beautiful beach of Full Moon Village Suoi Nuoc. We held out as long as we could for the best conditions and the waves did not disappoint, neither did the competitors. We saw a definite increase in local Vietnamese riders, great to see local enthusiasm from some of the best Vietnamese riders in the country. Other nationalities included Russia, America, United Kingdom, Indonesia, Italy and Spain, making for a great mix of nationalities sharing their passion together. With over 32 competitors we knew this was going to be one of the most exciting Surf competitions seen so far. As is the surfing way, it was an early start, the first competitors arriving at 05.00 to get some practise sessions. Glassy conditions with some clean frequent sets made for a perfect start to the heats. Due to the large number of competitors heats were arranged for ten minutes each with three-four competitors per heat. We saw some outstanding SUP action, the Vung Tao riders really gave the competition some edge and drama as they paddled it out to make it in to the next round. The Female surf event also saw some vast improvements from last year with an increase in both competitor numbers as well as riding style. As the heats continued and the unlucky competitors were knocked out of the running, we gradually arrived at the finals. The Men’s Surf division saw the four top riders (Sky Rama, Tai, Win and August) giving it all they had to take top position. The SUP finalists (Dimitry, Lam, Joao and Pavel) gave a great nail biting final performance, showing off their skills and all looking for the best wave to take them to the top of the podium. The female finals came down to the top competitors (Anna and Anya) head to head they fought against each other, neither one wanting to give up before the sound of the final horn. After the last heat was completed in each division the results were collected and anxious faces waited to hear the final results. The closing ceremony and award giving was held straight after the event, prizes this year included such gifts as Starboard SUP paddle, 6’ Jibes Fish Surf Board, Shamal eye wear, hotel vouchers, Bee surfing surf wax, golf vouchers, mini golf vouchers, restaurant and food vouchers, water sport rental vouchers and many many bottles of Freixenet Champagne. Big thanks goes out to all our sponsors who made this event possible, Coca Cola, La Vie, Tropical Mini Golf, Lang Ca Voi, Bee Surfing Wax, Sea Links, Blue Ocean Resort, AHI, Dragon Beach, Pizza Belle, The Warehouse, Le Fruit, Real Adventures and Full Moon Village. Warm thanks to all those involved, hope to see you all again next year with more new faces, nationalities and the creation of some new surfing memories. • Vietnam: MOF allows Vietnamese to enter casino
    06.11.2016
New Decree of the Ministry of Finance will allow local Vietnamese to enter designated casinos located at The Van Don and Phu Quoc integrated resorts on a trial basis. Following the ruling party’s decision on the new gaming industry, the Ministry of Finance has come up with a new draft decree which is much more realistic than previous draft versions in 2013 and June and September-October 2016. The new version was drafted based on the Party’s decision and covered all the issues of major interest to investors and operators. Prof. Augustine Ha Ton Vinh, Senior Advisor to the Van Don Special Economic Zone and Integrated Resorts, emphasized some key points including: 1. MOF divides the gaming industry into two levels, large casinos with US$2 billion in investment, and small casinos with any investment below the $2 billion investment level. 2. The draft decree made it clear local Vietnamese, 21 years and above making around US$500 per month in salary, without criminal records, and no objection from family members, i.e. spouses, parents, children, will be allowed to enter casinos. 3. The Van Don and Phu Quoc integrated resorts are designated locations for local Vietnamese. There will be a trial period of 3 years from the date they receive the gaming license. 4. The gaming license will be for a period of 20 years with a one-time non-renewable extension of 10 years. 5. Investors or operators have to commit a minimum of US$2 billion for each integrated resort and a 50 percent disbursement, or $1 billion has to be made before a gaming license is granted. 6. For each US$10 million in disbursed investment, investors can operate one gaming table and 10 electronic gaming or slot machines. Now that the Party leaders have decided on the future of the Vietnam gaming industry and the next steps, I believe MOF will soon release the final gaming decree, possibly in the next few months. • Vietnam: new page of the gaming industry
    26.10.2016
The ruling Communist Party of Vietnam has recently made it clear that it supports the creation of a new gaming industry and will allow local Vietnamese to enter designated casinos on a trial basis. Prof. Augustine Ha Ton Vinh, Senior Advisor to the Van Don Special Economic Zone and Integrated Resorts, commented about the new legislation with brief overview of the situation. In June 2013, the Party’s Politburo announced it supported a new Special Economic Zone and integrated resort on Van Don Island, situated in the UNESCO World Heritage Ha Long Bay. Along with its support, the Politburo commissioned research to assess the socio-economic impacts of allowing local Vietnamese to enter casinos. After three years of soul searching and policy debates, the ruling party’s leaders believe now is the time to move ahead, creating a new gaming industry. Vietnamese Government authorities made clear a number of issues of great interest to investors, operators and local Vietnamese, namely: 1. Local Vietnamese will be allowed to visit designated casinos. 2. Van Don and Phu Quoc integrated resorts are the two locations authorized to accept local Vietnamese on a 3-year trial basis. 3. In addition to the four already approved locations for Integrated Resorts: Van Don, South Hoi An, Ho Tram, and Phu Quoc. Two more integrated resorts are under consideration: in Hue and Cam Ranh Bay. 4. Total investment for an integrated resort is US$2 billion. A minimum $1 billion has to be disbursed before a gaming license is granted. 5. Smaller casinos can be expanded, upgraded to a higher IR level if they meet financial and other requirements, e.g. significant contributions to local economic and tourism development. 6. The new and revised draft gaming casino has to be finalized as soon as possible. Since Van Don is near the China border in the North and Phu Quoc is close to Thailand and Cambodian borders in the South, having local Vietnamese in these two locations will definitely help attract much needed foreign investment to these areas which bear some resemblance to rural Macau in the past, and will help expedite the creation of the two special economic zones. I believe, under this new decision, local Vietnamese will not be allowed to enter Ho Tram, at least for the next few years. • Thailand: Loi Krathong festival 2016
    23.08.2016
There are many people who debate its origins, meanings and myths, but few would deny that Loi Krathong, with its simple beauty, symbolism and anarchic sense of fun, is the festival that most imbues Thainess. Every year, on the full moon of the 12th lunar month, people nationwide, head out to local rivers and lakes to float banana leaf rafts, loaded with cargos of flowers, incense and candles as well as the prayers hopes and dreams of their owners. The Loi Krathong Festival 2016 falls on 14 November. Held when the annual rains have retreated, Loi Krathong is most commonly believed to have developed from an ancient ceremony to pay respects to water spirits and thank them for their bounty. However, some speculate that it’s held in homage to an ancient goddess while others see Krathongs as offerings to apologise to rivers and streams for pollution. • Festivals of Thailand: Loi Krathong
    19.08.2016
Loi Krathong is one of the most charming festivals of the Thai calendar and is enjoyed in different ways all over the kingdom. Held on the evening of the 12th lunar month’s full moon, Loi Krathong originated as a way of paying respects to the water goddess for her bounty over the year. Most locals celebrate by releasing a Kratong float made of banana leaves into a nearby waterway, but fairs and celebrations are also held and the evening is a wonderful introduction to the start of Thailand’s cool season. Sukhothai is the spiritual home of Loi Krathong and some of the biggest celebrations take place here in the famous historical park. But Loi Krathong is celebrated nationwide and on every waterway you can see amazing krathongs being floated. If you’re in the north you may even be lucky enough to see an amazing display of khom loi fire lanterns released into the starry sky in a ceremony called Yi Peng. A special campaign to attract local and international female travellers to enjoy some of the kingdom’s many attractions with a wide range of activities, special offers, discounts and privileges from the variety of products and services and events aimed at women, whether travelling alone or with groups of friends, to be arranged across the month of August 2016 – said TAT press release, 28 April, 2016 Mr. Yuthasak Supasorn, TAT Governor said, “We’ve designated August 2016 as a ‘month for women travellers’, in a way of marking Her Majesty Queen Sirikit’s 84th birthday,  to encourage the growth of the global and domestic female traveller segment in conjunct with our strategy to promote Thailand to be a Quality Leisure Destination. Increasingly women are coming to Thailand in groups or as solo travellers and expect to find activities and attractions geared to their needs. So, this campaign will broaden their recognition on how Thailand can cater for a great experience to female travellers like nowhere else.” Mrs. Juthaporn Rerngronasa, TAT Deputy Governor for International Marketing – Europe, Africa, Middle East and the Americas added, “In addition, when it comes to planning holidays, it’s often the women in the family making the main decisions. Female travellers are an increasingly strong market for local and inbound tourism to Thailand. The opening ceremony in Bangkok will showcase Thailand’s cultural diversity and the heritage of each region so that Thai and foreign visitors can plan their trips accordingly and choose where in Thailand to celebrate.” The grand opening ceremony of this year’s Songkran festival; namely, the “Songkran Splendours: The Procession of Three Kingdoms”, will be held on 10 April, from 15.00 – 18.00 Hrs., and will go through some of the most historic parts of Bangkok, starting from the Maha Jesadabordin Royal Pavilion through Ratchadamnoen Avenue to the Nagaraphirom Park on Maharaj Road. The parades will showcase some of the cultural elements of the unique Maha Songkran processions while telling some of the stories and myths behind the Thai New Year. Spectators will have the chance to learn how the Songkran celebration has changed over the years and from region to region. The Procession of Three Kingdoms will showcase the glory of the Kingdom of Rama III and celebrate wondrous creatures from Thai mythology as depicted on the walls of Wat Pho. The Kingdom of Rama V the Great procession will focus on 13 April, which is known as the Songkran Day in Thailand and celebrate its traditions. Finally the Kingdom of Rama VII procession will showcase how Songkran celebrations have spread around the world. Following the three-kingdom processions, there will be a colourful parade of Songkran traditions from five regions of Thailand. Representing the North is Lampang’s Salung Luang, where Buddha images are paraded around the streets to bring blessings. From the Northeast is the procession of ‘Dok Mai’ trees, which are made in the grounds of Loei’s temples and decorated brightly with flowers and bells to celebrate Songkran. From the Central Region will be a cultural procession from Ratchaburi that celebrates the ancient culture and traditions of Thailand’s Mon people. The Eastern region’s offering will be a parade of Si Maharaja Rice towers from Chon Buri province, built to propagate the gods at New Year. Finally from the Southern region will be a Nang Dan procession from Nakhon Si Thammarat, which celebrates the three main gods of the Hindu pantheon. The “Songkran Splendours: The Procession of Three Kingdoms” event will open into the nationwide celebration of Songkran. TAT will be giving its support to stage grand events in several major tourist destinations including Bangkok, Samut Prakan, Kanchanaburi, Sukhothai, Chiang Mai, Nakhon Phanom, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Ayutthaya, Suphan Buri, Nong Khai, Chon Buri, Khon Kaen, Phuket, Songkhla (Hat Yai), and Surat Thani (Ko Samui). Mr. Visanu said, “TAT has also launched a campaign to promote Thainess and water saving during this year’s Songkran celebration. We are encouraging both the Thai people and our visitors to join us in upholding the true taste of how Songkran is celebrated traditionally. This includes making merit and listening to temple sermons, purifying or bathing Buddha statues, and pouring water onto the hands of elders to show respect and seek their New Year blessings. We would also like to urge revellers to wear proper attire or traditional Thai costumes or fabric, and to just sprinkle scented water over each other instead of throwing water aggressively or using high-pressure water guns. We believe this will help engage everyone to collaborate in helping to preserve Thailand’s unique cultural heritage for years to come.” TAT expects the 2016 Songkran celebration to attract 2.64 million travellers, including 2.14 million Thai (up 2 per cent) and 495,000 foreign travellers (up 26 per cent), and generate 15 billion Baht for the Thai economy, representing a year-on-year increase of 18 per cent. • SPIEF 2015: Asia-Pacific region cooperation perspectives
    19.06.2015
The global economic development map is changing literally before our eyes - said President of Russia H.E. Vladimir Putin, when speaking at the SPIEF-2015 19 June 2015. Asia-Pacific Region nations such as China, Japan, South Korea and ASEAN nations already account for one quarter of the global economy. Over the next decade, it is these markets that will become the primary source of growth in global demand for goods and services. I want to repeat again that we strive to cooperate with everyone – everyone who is ready to work on the basis of equality and mutual respect, and wants to implement mutually beneficial projects. I am confident that the trade and economic partnership with Latin American nations and BRICS states also holds enormous potential. The BRICS summit coming up in early July in Russia will certainly contribute to broadening our business contacts. I want to stress that active cooperation with the new centres of global growth does not in any way mean that we intend to give less attention to the dialogue with our traditional western partners. I am confident that this cooperation will certainly continue. Strengthening partnership with APR states is a highly important element of our work to develop Russia’s Far East. We are creating the most free and comfortable conditions possible for placing capital and launching production. Source: http://kremlin.ru

    09.05.2015
President of Russia had a meeting with President of Vietnam Truong Tan Sang in Moscow on 9 May 2015. The Russian President congratulated Truong Tan Sang and the people of Vietnam on the 40th anniversary of National Reunification. Vladimir Putin also noted that in 2015 Russia and Vietnam mark 65 years of diplomatic relations. * * * President of Russia Vladimir Putin: Mr President, friends, allow me to once again welcome you in Moscow. Thank you for accepting the invitation and coming to Moscow to celebrate the 70th Victory anniversary. I would like to use this opportunity to yet again congratulate you, Mr President, and all the people of Vietnam on the 40th anniversary of the restoration of your country’s territorial integrity, the reunification of the country’s north and south. My congratulations go not only to the entire friendly Vietnamese people, but to you personally as a participant in combat action. The people of Vietnam know like no other people the trials brought by war and the value of peace. This year we mark another date – the 65th anniversary of the restoration of our diplomatic relations. We maintain a very rhythmic political dialogue and develop our strategic partnership. I am very happy to have this opportunity to discuss our bilateral relations with you. President of Vietnam Truong Tan Sang (retranslated): Comrade Putin, comrades, first, I would like to express my gratitude for the opportunity to meet with you, despite your very busy schedule these days. I would also like to use this opportunity to congratulate you on behalf of our leadership on the 70th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. We highly value this victory. It laid the foundation for the struggle for independence by various peoples of the world – in Asia, Africa and America. It also became a precondition for the victory of our revolution in August 1945. This is also a chance to confirm the traditional nature of relations between our two countries. We would like to further these relations – this is one of the key priorities of our foreign policy. We are fully aware of the fact that everything Vietnam has achieved today is, of course, a result of maximum efforts on the part of the Vietnamese people, however Vietnam also accepted help and assistance from its international friends, including Russia. It was a great honour for us to take part in the parade on Red Square this morning. We could feel the spirit of victory. All the songs, the music we heard today in Red Square are also very dear to us, Vietnamese people. Source: http://kremlin.ru/

  • Launch of Russian Culture Days in Vietnam
    12.11.2013
Vladimir Putin spoke at the opening ceremony of the Days of Russian Culture in the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. Before the ceremony, the President of Russia and President of Vietnam Truong Tan Sang visited the exhibit entitled Russian- Vietnamese Relations Through the Lenses of ITAR-TASS and the VNA [Vietnam News Agency]. The photo exhibit was organised by the two countries’ news agencies for the Days of Russian Culture in Vietnam. President of Russia Vladimir Putin: Mr President, friends, It gives me great pleasure to speak at the opening ceremony of the Days of Russian Culture in Vietnam. I am confident that the planned events will help further strengthen our bilateral relations. Russia and Vietnam truly are strategic partners. Our countries cooperate dynamically in political, economic and humanitarian spheres. We are implementing major projects in investment, science, education and other fields. Long traditions of friendship and mutual understanding constitute the core of such a long and fruitful collaboration. We were together during the struggle for Vietnam’s independence, and during the postwar revival. Tens of thousands of Vietnamese citizens were educated in our universities and have a good command of the Russian language. Russian writers, artists and filmmakers are well-known in Vietnam; people here like Russian classical and folk music. I’m sure that our Culture Days will generate a lot of interest in Vietnam. Each year the programme becomes fuller. This time the Days of Russian Culture coincide with screenings of Russian films, and the famous Pyatnitsky Choir and leading opera singers will perform in the cities of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh. The Russian Museum of Ethnography brought an exhibition of traditional costumes and crafts to Vietnam. The State Museum of Oriental Art in Moscow will host an exhibition on the work of the famous Russian artist Nicholas Roerich. It is no coincidence that this museum is showcasing him; Roerich dedicated his entire life to the East. We will continue to promote the expansion of bilateral cultural exchanges, especially since interest in Vietnamese art and history is growing in my country. Russians want to know more about Vietnam’s unique literary and musical heritage, its ancient architectural monuments and your nation’s distinctive traditions. So I’m sure that the Hanoi Days, which will take place in Moscow in late November, will meet with great success. We look forward to seeing Vietnamese performers during the Days of Vietnamese Culture in Russia, scheduled for 2014. We will have plenty of other opportunities and occasions to implement new cultural and educational projects together. Several important historical dates await us: 2014 is the 20th anniversary of signing the Friendship Treaty, and 2015 is the 40th anniversary of Vietnam’s unification, and the 65th anniversary of the establishment of our diplomatic relations. I am sure that in the future Russian-Vietnamese partnership and mutual understanding will only grow stronger. In conclusion, let me thank the organisers of the Russian Culture Days for their preparatory work, and sincerely wish participants and guests many vivid impressions. Thank you.
